Leona Irene McMillan McDowell, 100, died Wednesday at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, where she lived the past four year.

Born Aug. 13, 1907, at the family home in Jackson Township, Mercer County, she was the daughter of William Edwin and Hattie May McFall McMillan.

Mrs. McDowell was a member of the Coolspring Presbyterian Church in Fairview Township, Mercer County.

She was a graduate of Mercer High School and Slippery Rock Normal School. She taught for four years in three of the one-room schools in Mercer County, Cape Horn, Cass Ridge and Jones. She was a member of the Jackson Grange, a charter member of the Stoneboro Women's Club and served as a school director for Jackson Township, Stoneboro and Lakeview school districts. She and her late husband were co-owners of McDowell Farms in Mercer.

Surviving are a son, John A. McDowell of Slippery Rock; six grandchildren, Amy Coltpetzer and her husband, Tom, of Greenville, Cheryl Cashdollar and her husband, Tyrone, of Clarks Mills, Scott McDowell and his wife, Lisa,of Boiling Springs, Jean AnnDean and her husband, Bryan, of New Castle, Nancy McDowell of Mercer, and Andrew McDowell of Avondale, Ariz. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

She married John C. McDowell Dec. 19, 1929, in the Jackson Center Presbyterian Church Parsonage. He died Dec. 19, 1989. She also was preceded in death by a son, Robert; a daughter, Mary Jean; and two sisters, Mrs. Esther Ligo and Mrs. Eunice North.

Pitt St., Mercer.Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Philip Chalfant, pastor of Coolspring Presbyterian Church, and the Rev.
