Woman helps with care system's major fundraiser

Butler resident Joy Bray has spent three months volunteering for the first major fundraiser for the Vincentian Charitable Foundation, a group that benefits the Vincentian Collaborative System in Pittsburgh.

The Vincentian system encompasses four long-term care facilities, two child development facilities and an out-patient rehabilitation center.

The fundraiser is a performance of "Til Death Do Us Part: Late Nite Catechism 3." It will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carson Middle School Auditorium in Pittsburgh's North Hills area.

Robin Weber, the Vincentian system director of communications, thought of Bray when searching for volunteers for the foundation's fundraiser.

"We were looking for people who have been involved with the home," Weber said.

Bray fits that mold since she has a long-standing relationship with the Vincentian system.

Bray's sister, Barb, became a receptionist at Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh in the late 1970s. Then her sister was a resident of the home from April 1989 until her death in December 2007.

Bray's mother was a volunteer at the home for 30 years, and she lived in its assisted living home for nine months before her death.

Bray had such positive experiences with the VCS that she jumped at the chance to help out the foundation.

All summer, Bray and other volunteers have been planning and promoting a performance of "Til Death Do Us Part: Late Nite Catechism 3." It features Sister, a nun who gives the audiences advice on the Sacrament of Marriage and Last Rites. It also features Sister's own version of the Newlywed Game, complete with audience participation.

There are two ticket options. One is just the show. The other includes the show and a wedding-themed reception with hot appetizers and tiered wedding cakes.

According to Weber, all the money raised from the event will go for patient care not funded by private insurance or government programs.

Bray has enjoyed her volunteer time: "They're a nice, friendly group of people to work with."
