Center Township man held on drug charges stemming from jail phone calls

CHICORA — Drug charges that are based on phone calls made from the county jail were held for court against one of the four suspects.

Felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver, possession and criminal use of a communication facility, and a misdemeanor charge of conspiracy filed against Clint E. Nagle, 40, of Center Township, were held for Common Pleas Court at a preliminary hearing Wednesday, Nov. 27, before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

Hearings for the other suspects, Jason Prementine, 52, of Slippery Rock; Kaitlyn A. Dempsey, 35; of Butler; and Benjamin A. Mauthe, 41, of Butler, also were scheduled for Wednesday. Prementine and Dempsey waived their hearings, and Mauthe’s hearing was continued to Dec. 17.

State police filed the charges Nov. 7 after listening to recorded phone calls Nagle allegedly made to Dempsey, Prementine and Mauthe in August from the prison.

Trooper Kurtis Glasgow read transcripts of the calls during his testimony. He said slang words used in the calls including “one,” “half of one,” “quarter,” “big ones,” “stash,” “ball” and “T-shirt” referred to various amounts of methamphetamine that were found Aug. 19 when a search warrant was executed at Nagle home and a consensual search was conducted at Mauthe’ home.

Glasgow said a bag of methamphetamine as well as psychedelic mushrooms, scales and boxes of bags were found under Nagle’s bed and an “owe sheet” listing names of people and the amounts of money they owed him was found in his garage.

He said between 33 and 34 grams of methamphetamine were found in Mauthe’s home.

Stoughton ordered the charges against Nagle to be held for court, and denied a request from his attorney to reduce his $100,000 bail.

Dempsey’s bail was reduced from $100,000 to $50,000. Mauthe was released form prison after posting $15,000 bail. Prementine was not incarcerated.
