ARLINGTON, Texas - Mark Teixeira became the second player in Texas Rangers history - and first in more than 19 years - to hit for the cycle, accomplishing the feat against Tuesday the Cleveland Indians.
Teixeira hit a two-run double in the third, a three-run homer in the fourth, a two-run triple in the fifth, then completed the cycle with a leadoff single in the seventh. He was removed for a pinch runner after his single, finishing the night 4-for-5 with a career-high seven RBIs.
Oddibe McDowell was the only other Rangers player to hit for the cycle - on July 23, 1985, against the Indians at Arlington Stadium.
LOS ANGELES - At least one member of the top-ranked Southern California football team is under investigation for sexual assault, the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday.The assault allegedly occurred Monday morning, according to Officer Esther Reyes, a police spokeswoman.She declined to elaborate. Neither police nor the university would identify which player or players were involved.
ATLANTA - Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, already facing federal drug conspiracy charges, was hit Tuesday with an extra charge of attempting to possess cocaine.The charge was included in a superseding indictment, a common move used by federal authorities to refine the original accusations.Lewis is accused of trying to get the cocaine with his childhood friend, Angelo Jackson. Prosecutors say that Lewis and Jackson tried to buy cocaine in Atlanta in 2000 from an undercover informant.Both were charged in the conspiracy case in February, but at first only Jackson was charged with attempted cocaine possession.
WASHINGTON (AP)- Top-seeded Andre Agassi withstood an early challenge from local favorite Paul Goldstein for a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic.Agassi, who won last week's Cincinnati Masters, trailed 3-1 before taking the next four games and seizing control of the match.Jan-Michael Gambill reached the second round with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Steven Koubek. Gambill had lost opening-round matches in his last three events.Also, sixth-seeded Alberto Martin beat Wayne Ferreira 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), and seventh-seeded Cyril Saulnier defeated Antony Dupuis 6-3, 6-4.
