Andrew Menchyk Sr.
Andrew M. Menchyk Sr., 79, of Butler, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford, after a lengthy illness.
Andrew was born Nov. 10, 1945, to Joseph S. Menchyk Sr. and Nellie (Bachura) Menchyk. Andrew graduated from Butler High School in 1963 and followed in his father’s footsteps to Pullman Standard, where he worked as a machinist for 18 years. He ultimately retired from Butler Area School District as a custodian.
Andrew embodied the blue-collar work ethic and could solve any problem with his common-sense approach. He prided himself on his ingenuity and his uncanny ability to repair anything and to make broken junk work again. He was the original MacGyver.
Andrew was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. His love for hunting and fishing was eclipsed only by his love to tell hunting and fishing stories. He could make the most mundane Saturday in the woods sound like an epic adventure. He loved to recycle and retell stories from 40 or 50 years ago with a new embellishment on each telling.
Andrew was a sports fan and spent his fall weekends watching college and pro football. His favorite teams were the West Virginian Mountaineers and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was an armchair quarterback and always had all the answers for the Steelers’ shortcomings.
Andrew lived for his family, starting with his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann (Krchnak) Menchyk, whom he married May 5, 1973. He and Mary Ann were always there for each other, though thick and thin. Andrew and Mary Ann had two children, Andrew M. Menchyk Jr., who was born in 1974, and Amy M. (Menchyk) Krainbucher, who was born in 1977. Andrew always put his children first and cared more about their well-being than his own. As much as he loved his children, he overflowed with love and pride at any thought or mention of his five grandchildren, Anastasia M. Menchyk, Katerina M. Menchyk, Andrew M. Menchyk III, David A. Krainbucher and Alexis N. Menchyk. His legacy will live in them.
In addition to his immediate family, Andrew is survived by his daughter-in-law, Sharon M. Menchyk; and his son-in-law David M. Krainbucher. Andrew embraced Sharon and David as though they were his own children. Andrew is also survived by his brother, Joseph S. Menchyk Jr.; his sister-in-law, Faye Menchyk; his sister, Rose (Menchyk) Stuper; his brother-in- law, Kirby Stuper; his sister-in-law, Donna (Krchnak) Stuper; and brother-in-law, Frank Stuper. In his later years, Andrew enjoyed many casino trips with Mary Ann, and Joseph, Faye, Rose and Kirby. Though he usually lost more than he won, those times together were worth more than any prize.
The family would like to thank Concordia Palliative Care and Good Samaritan nurses, especially Makenzie and Emily. We would like to acknowledge Peggy, a special palliative care nurse. She held our hands throughout this very difficult journey. May God bless her.
