Georgia Litzenberg

Sister Georgia Litzenberg SC, formerly Sister Marie Eric, 83, died May 3, 2021, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg.

Born in Butler, Sister Georgia entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on Sept. 8, 1956, from St. Joseph Parish, North Oakland, Pittsburgh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leottie and Mary (Weiland) Litzenberg; three brothers, Arthur, Eric and Weiley; and by a sister, Kathleen Daugherty.

She is survived by her nieces and a nephew.

She earned a bachelor's degree in education, social studies from Seton Hill University, a master's degree in theological, pastoral and liturgical studies from LaSalle University in Philadelphia, and was a board certified chaplain.

Sister Georgia taught students of the primary level in schools of the dioceses of Greensburg in Pittsburgh and Tucson, and the archdiocese of Los Angeles. She served as a teacher of catechetics at Holy Trinity Parish in Huntingdon and as director of religious education for Sacred Heart, Ascension and St. Boniface parishes, as well as at St. Albert the Great Parish, St. Luke Parish in Pittsburgh, and Christ the Divine Teacher Parish in Chippewa Township.

From 1987 until 1990, Sister Georgia was director of religious education in Preston County, W.Va., and from 1990 to 1992, she was pastoral associate at Holy Spirit Parish in Jacksonville, N.C., and at Christ the King Parish in Southaven, Miss. After she completed her CPE residency program at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital and was certified as a board chaplain, Sister Georgia began ministry at St. Mary Regional Center (now Elk Regional Health Center) in St. Marys, Pa.

From 2001 to 2002, she was the director of religious education at St. Sebastian Parish in Imperial, Pa., and from 2002 until 2009, she was the pastoral minister at St. John, Delmont, and St. Mary, Export, parishes in Greensburg.

She was elected as vice president of the Society of Chaplains, Western Region in 2001.

In reflecting on her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Georgia stated, “Faith was a big part of my family and I wanted to be of service. In my ministry, I have touched the lives of many and many lives have touched mine.”

LITZENBERG — Visitation for Sister Georgia Litzenberg SC, who died Monday, May 3, 2021, will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at Caritas Christi Motherhouse, Mount Thor Road, Greensburg, where a vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Monday and a funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.The funeral liturgy will be live-streamed and can be accessed through the link https://venue.streamspot.com/2af9e1eb.Arrangements are under the direction of Leo M.
