Man pinned by 700 pound piece of steel

WINFIELD TWP — One person was injured Tuesday morning when a piece of steel fell from machinery inside Armstrong Cement & Supply Corp., temporarily pinning a man.

Emergency responders say the man, who was temporarily trapped beneath a piece of steel estimated to weigh about 700 pounds, was alert and conscious when volunteer firefighters removed him from the third floor of the company's facility on Clearfield Road.

Capt. Adam Hartwig of the Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Company said the man was complaining of pain in his left arm, abdomen and left leg. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. No one else was injured in the incident.

Hartwig said the piece of steel apparently fell from a hopper machine that was suspended from the ceiling of the facility and was being removed and decommissioned.

A message left with Armstrong Cement requesting information on the incident was not immediately returned.
