Fire at Moraine Camplands destroys camper, origin unknown
The cause of a fire that destroyed an unoccupied camper late Thursday, Dec. 28, at the Moraine Camplands in Brady Township is being investigated, according to officials.
Initial reports of the fire came from neighbors near the campground at 8:56 p.m., according to Nathan Wulff, assistant chief of Unionville Volunteer Fire Company.
“It was pretty well burned up by the time we got there. It was under control in about 10 minutes,” Wulff said.
He added that one caller reported the camper had exploded, but there were no signs of explosion at the scene. According to Wulff, the noise could have been caused by a propane tank caught in the flames.
A small shed and two golf carts near the camper were damaged in the blaze, Wulff said.
A state police fire marshal was notified of the fire and scheduled to investigate Friday morning.
“The fire marshal likes to be notified every time there’s a fire, but the trailer wasn’t occupied. It’s kind of odd for a trailer to randomly catch fire in the offseason,” Wulff said.
He added that locating the site of the fire was one challenge firefighters met on scene.
“It was pretty much as far back in the campground as you can get,” Wulff said. “The hardest part was finding it because the roads are not adequately marked.”
Crews left Moraine Camplands just after 10 p.m.
Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team, Prospect and West Sunbury volunteer fire departments, and Butler Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.
