Ex-substitute teacher declared sexual predator

Following a court hearing Wednesday, a former substitute school teacher was declared a sexually violent predator and sent to state prison.

Matthew Goettler, 25, of Clay Township pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault, indecent assault and four counts of corrupting the morals of a minor. He also pleaded no contest to another two counts of corrupting the morals of a minor.

He reportedly engaged two boys, ages 12 and 16, in a game in which the loser performed acts of a sexual nature.

For those allegations, Goettler pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault and indecent assault of the 12-year-old boy and corrupting the morals of a minor for his contact with the older boy.

The remaining corruption charges represent boys and girls ages 13 to 15 who allege Goettler held inappropriate conversations with them through electronic media.

Goettler was sentenced to serve 21 to 42 months in state prison, followed by 6 years of probation.
