SRU student faces numerous charges after bar disturbance
SLIPPERY ROCK — A Slippery Rock University student was arrested after he allegedly fought with several troopers called for a disturbance outside a bar early Sunday morning, state police said.
Maurice E. Madden, 25, of North Hills, Montgomery County, was placed in the Butler County Prison following his arraignment on numerous charges.
He is charged with resisting arrest, trespass, two counts of disorderly conduct, harassment and public drunkenness.
Police were called about 1:20 a.m. to the Ginger Hill Tavern on South Main Street, where they found Madden, outside, shirtless and challenging a bouncer to a fight, court documents said.
Four troopers tried to calm down the suspect, who they believed was intoxicated. They asked him to leave, police said.
Moments earlier, a police affidavit said, Madden had been thrown out of the bar because he had too much to drink and for being "verbally abusive" to employees.
Instead of leaving the area once police got there, he walked to a nearby convenience store parking lot and allegedly called the troopers derogatory names. He also threatened to fight them.
Troopers said they repeatedly asked him to go home.
But Madden refused, the affidavit said, and the officers decided to arrest him since he was causing a "public alarm to the large crowd that was in the area due to Slippery Rock University coming back into session."
Madden is a sophomore at SRU, said university spokeswoman Rita Abent.
The suspect ran through the convenience store parking lot and around a nearby fast food restaurant. Two troopers ran after Madden while two other troopers tried to cut him off in their police cars.
While being arrested, police said, Madden hit, kicked, shoved, scratched and pushed the troopers.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Madden, who was remanded to prison on $10,000 bail.
