Union downs A-C Valley

Grove City, Summit prevail; Freeport falls

FOXBURG — Union’s passing combination of Lane Cicciarelli and Shane Murphy proved deadly Friday night.

Cicciarelli found Murphy for touchdown tosses of 27, 12 and 70 yards — the Golden Knights’ first three scores of the game — in a 36-7 football victory at A-C Valley.

Dylan Shirey added 124 yards rushing and a touchdown for Union.

The Falcons’ lone score was a 4-yard run by Mike Suto in the second quarter. Suto led the team with 62 yards on the ground.

Union’s defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions.

Grove City 34, Carrick 12 — The Eagles piled up 367 rushing yards on nearly 8 yards per carry in this season-opening victory.

Foster Reznor tallied 106 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns (one receiving) and teammate Jesse Hodge scored on touchdown runs of 4, 15 and 7 yards.

Grove City’s defense held Carrick to just 82 yards rushing on 26 attempts.

Summit Academy 35, East Allegheny 6 — Elijah Hardy rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries as the Knights racked up a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to a season-opening win.

Hardy’s performance included a 98-yard run, while the Summit Academy defense forced six turnovers.

“It was a great win,” said Knights coach Steve Sherer. “There was good effort put forth by our kids.”

Kittanning 40, Freeport 14 — Steven Lassinger rushed for 42 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown, but Freeport watched the Wildcats score the first 40 points of the game in a rout of the Yellowjackets.

Zane Dudek scored three touchdowns and Braydon Toy added a pair of scores for Kittanning.

Dylan Hochbein also scored for Freeport on a 25-yard run.

Boys SoccerJim Mansman scored the tying goal with 20 minutes remaining in regulation and Freeport won on penalty kicks in topping Springdale 2-2 (6-4) Friday night.The Yellowjackets trailed 2-0 at the half. Mario Borino scored to cut the lead in half early in the second half.Patrick McNulty ended up making the game-winning penalty kick for Freeport.Knoch 1, Plum 1 (4-3) — Jonmichael Lambert scored the game-tying goal in regulation and then booted the game-winner in penalty kicks to lead the Knights.Baldwin 1, Seneca Valley 0 — The Raiders fell in their kickoff tournament and will play Norwin in the consolation game Saturday at 5 p.m. with the championship game pitting Chartiers Valley and Baldwin at 7 p.m.

Girls SoccerMacy Stalnaker and Shana Hays each scored a goal to lead Butler to a 2-1 win over Villa Maria.

Girls VolleyballEmily Rowland had five aces and two kills to lead First Baptist to a 25-15, 25-23, 25-12 win over Evangel Heights.Casey Hall added two blocks and Lyndsey Lowe pitched in 11 assists in the win. Corrie Kennedy also had five aces.
