Area golfers advance in section

Slippery Rock girls soccer cruises, 10-1

Seneca Valley's Evan Hangliter fired a 78 at Hiland Golf Course at the WPIAL Section 3-AAA tournament Tuesday to advance to the individual semifinals next week.

Nic Leone of Butler shot an 80 and also advanced.

Nick Cuny, a Cranberry Township native, shot a 79 for Central Catholic to qualify for the semifinals.

Cuny's teammate, Matt Del Rosso, had the lowest score of the day with a 75.

The semifinals will be held Tuesday.

VolleyballFreeport blasted Mars 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 in a Section 4-AA showdown.The Yellowjackets (5-0, 4-0) were led by Zoe Pawlak, who tallied 31 service points, 10 aces, four blocks and five kills.Alexis Schrecengost had a team-high seven kills with three blocks and five service points, while Megan Sweeny recorded 15 service points, two aces, five kills and two blocks. Cross CountryColin Meehan won the boys race for Freeport as the Yellowjackets downed West Shamokin 18-43, but fell to Riverview 27-29.Meehan finished in 17 minutes, 58 seconds.The Freeport girls also split, beating West Shamokin 17-46 and dropping a close race to Riverview 26-29.Becca Dudek was the Yellowjackets' top finisher, placing second with a time of 20:37.

Abby Magliocca had two goals and two assists.Makenzie Elliott, Lily Weitel and Jenna Whitmer also scored for Slippery Rock (3-2, 3-0), which plays at Grove City on Thursday.

Boys SoccerKarns City routed Clarion-Limestone by a 6-0 margin on Monday. The Gremlins (4-1) picked up this road victory thanks in part to two goals apiece from Jace Ebbitt and Spenser Myers.Tyler Pollock and Conrad Snyder both contributed a goal and two assists.Dave Olszak made three saves to earn the shutout.Mars 5, Kittanning 1 — The Planets cruised to victory and boosted their record to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Section 2-AA.Seneca Valley 2, Pine-Richland 1 — The Raiders improve to 5-1-1 overall and 4-0 in Section 2-AAA play.Hempfield 1, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado dropped to 5-3 overall following the shutout.
