Summit's Rodriguez fans 18 in win

Summit Academy’s Wilfredo Rodriguez fanned 18 batters in a complete-game, 4-2 baseball win over visiting West Shamokin Monday afternoon.

Rodriguez’s effort included no walks and just two hits given up. He tallied a single and triple at the plate.

Dallas Kelley added a pair of doubles for the Knights (1-1, 1-0), who visit Freeport on Wednesday.

Softball

Abbi Thrower singled, doubled and tripled in Knoch’s 12-2, six-inning victory over Simon Kenton (Ky.) Sunday afternoon in Kentucky. Codi Reed earned the win, striking out five and walking none in six innings of work.

The Knights went 2-1 while in the Bluegrass State, also beating Highlands (Ky.) 6-5 and losing to Boone County (Ky.) 4-3.

Track and Field

Both Mars teams defeated Valley and Highlands.

Zach Hunkele earned wins in the boys 1,600 and 3,200 runs as Mars overwhelmed the Vikings (114-30) and Golden Rams (89-57).

The Planet girls were led by Ali Goetz, who won the shot put, discus and javelin. Mars defeated Valley 110-39 and Highlands 106-43.

Evan Lowers’ victory at No. 2 singles was the lone win for Grove City in a 4-1 loss at Greenville.

Despite eight goals from Megan Crawford, Butler suffered a 15-14 overtime loss at Latrobe.

Kayla Widenhofer, Abbey Murdick and Reanna Everton each scored twice for the Golden Tornado (2-1).

Shaler 17, Mars 7 — Bella Alampi scored three times and contributed an assist for the Planets.

Also scoring for Mars were Margaret Manjerovic, Kelly O’Connell, Lilly Marcoux and Shannon Doyle.
