Welcome home, LeBron Rally planned, but details still unclear

The date and location for the “Welcome Home LeBron Community Rally” have been announced, but what isn’t yet clear is what will happen during the event.

That’s not for a lack of ideas, though.

The city of Akron and the LeBron James Family Foundation, who are jointly handling the rally, have been flooded by requests to take part since the event was announced during an Akron City Council meeting last Monday.

The offers have come from twirlers, marching bands, dancers, garage bands, rappers, an 83-year-old woman who wrote a poem, and a local candy company that wants to make a LeBron James chocolate. The LeBron James Grandmothers Fan Club also want in.

“It’s crazy,” said Stephanie York, the city’s spokeswoman, who estimates that she has received 50 emails and phone calls from ardent James’ supporters.

York will sit down with foundation representatives Monday to begin going over the many ideas in what is expected to the be first of several planning sessions.

“We want local people involved,” she said. “We’ll see what we have and how it fits in.”

The foundation announced Friday that the rally will be at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 8, at the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium, 302 E. Buchtel Ave. It will cap off a week of activities to mark James’ return to his native Akron as a member of the Cavaliers.

On Aug. 2 and 10, events tied to the LeBron James Family Foundation’s first PROMISE Project will be held.

Local businesses are coming together to help James, his foundation and Nicole Curtis from HGTV’s Rehab Addict renovate the home and yard of one of the Wheels for Education students. Yards at the homes of nine other Wheels for Education students also will be re-landscaped with the help of Akron businesses and volunteers.

Wheels for Education is an outgrowth of James’ annual bike-athon. The initiative by the foundation aims to encourage third-graders to stay in school, lead healthy lifestyles, listen to their teachers and eventually graduate.

Before the rally on Aug. 8, the foundation’s Wheels for Education family event will be at 6 p.m. at InfoCision Stadium, with James making remarks. This event is closed to the public. The rally will follow from 7:15 to 9 p.m.
