Annual chicken dinner is Saturday

EVANS CITY — Residents and those traveling through Evans City on Saturday can enjoy a delicious meal and support a worthy cause at the same time.

The annual EDCO Park Chicken Dinner and Bake Sale will run from 11:30 a.m. to at least 6 p.m., or when the half chickens disappear.

The event is at the parking lot of the EDCO Park and Pool on Route 68 just west of the railroad tracks.

Cindy Caldwell, EDCO Park Authority board member and the manager of the EDCO Park pool, said one request she received this year proves how delicious the smoked chicken is.

“Someone asked how we could ship it overnight to Florida,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said the chicken barbecue and the BASF Chili Open winter golf event are the authority’s two biggest fundraisers each year, They each bring in about $3,200.

The money raised at the chicken barbecue, Caldwell said, normally goes to maintenance and upgrades at the pool. But because of the cool and rainy weather this summer that has kept swimmers away, the money will go to the authority’s general fund for normal operating expenses.

Tickets for the meal are $8 in advance and can be bought at the EDCO Park swimming pool or from any park authority board member.

The cost of tickets on the day of the event is $9.

Residents can have their tickets delivered by calling the pool at 724-538-8920.

Soft drinks and baked goods provided by the pool’s members also will be available.

All meals are prepared for takeout, but can be enjoyed in one of the park’s pavilions.

“We have a lot of walk-up customers who go in the park and eat,” Caldwell said.

She said the authority last year sold about 700 chicken dinners.

Caldwell said this year’s dinners will come with a flier that announces a new festival in Evans City in October. She would not divulge details of the mysterious festival, but said those who buy a chicken dinner Saturday will be the first to learn about it.

For information on the chicken barbecue or tickets, call the pool at 724-538-8920. Residents of Evans City interested in helping with the event are welcome to sell tickets. Information on helping with tickets sales is available by stopping by or calling the pool.
