Fleeing youths captured

Fight breaks out at Adams facility

ADAMS TWP — Four staff members at MHY Family Services were injured and at least two girls are facing felony and other charges stemming from a fight Wednesday night at the facility on Route 228, authorities said.

Three teens involved later ran off but officers from several police departments quickly captured them following the melee.

Adams Township police said the girls — one of them 15 years old and the others 14 years old — started fighting one another shortly before 8:45 p.m. at the Sloan building, one of the cottages at the youth home.

The fight escalated after staff members, both men and women, tried to break up the initial fisticuffs.

The girls punched all four staffers, said Adams Township Assistant Police Chief Shawn Anglum. One of the other staff members also reported being strangled and thrown across the room.

The staffers suffered “superficial” injuries including bruising and swelling that did not require hospital treatment, police said.

The teens bolted from the home, running in different directions.

Police from Adams Township, Mars, Evans City and Middlesex Township were called to the facility. Officers had all three girls rounded up within 10 minutes.

The suspects were caught along Route 228, not more than one-quarter mile from the youth home, and gave up without incident, police said. None of the youths was hurt.

Butler County juvenile probation officers were notified and took custody of two of the teens — one of the younger girls and the 15-year-old. Each faces a felony charge of riot.

Additional lesser charges include simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Youth home administrators agreed to have the other 14-year-old girl returned to the facility. Anglum said this morning that he did not know if she would be charged.

Mars Home for Youth officials declined to comment.
