Man faces attempted rape, assault, drug, other charges
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — An Allegheny County man is jailed on charges he beat a woman and tried to rape her Sunday at a campground near McConnells Mill and Moraine state parks.
State police said Derek Daniel Schindler, 29, of Shaler Township and the 20-year-old woman about 4:30 a.m. drove to the Breakneck Campground on Cheeseman Road in Slippery Rock Township
Before entering the campground they passed a sign saying it was closed for the season, according to a police report.
Schindler a short time later parked his car, and he and the alleged victim got in the back seat and began drinking alcohol.
Sometime between 6 and 7 a.m., Schindler “began striking the victim in the face (and) attempted to sexually assault her,” the report said. It did not say if the woman was injured.
Police later arrested Schindler, who was arraigned at 3:40 p.m. Sunday on charges of attempted rape and aggravated assault, both felonies.
Additionally he was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of indecent assault, unlawful restraint, simple assault, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and furnishing alcohol to a minor.
He also is charged with summary counts of defiant trespass and harassment.
Schindler was placed in the Lawrence County Jail on $50,000 bail following his arraignment. He faces a preliminary hearing Sept. 23 in Lawrence County Central Court.
