BC3 changes name of library after $1M Heaton donation

BUTLER TWP — The library at Butler County Community College now is called the Heaton Family Learning Commons, thanks to the recent $1 million donation from Robert Heaton.

The BC3 trustees approved the name change at their Wednesday meeting. The building had been called the John A. Beck Jr. Library since 1989.

Using the term “learning commons” instead of library is more reflective of how a 21st century facility will be used, said Nick Neupauer, BC3 president.

“It’s more of an information study place ... really focusing on information and things tied with teaching and learning,” Neupauer said.

The college is involved in a $4.7 million library renovation designed by Renaissance 3 Architects of Pittsburgh.

Heaton, a lifelong Butler resident and businessman, contributed $1 million for the project last month. Another $2.3 million of the project is funded through a state grant.

The estimated completion date for that project is August 2016.

Technology, computer space and meeting places are all emphasized with the restructuring of the building.

The Beck family will be honored in another way at the college, but that has yet to be determined.

Also at the meeting, the trustees:

n Voted to name the house at 278 Old Plank Road, a property the college bought a few years ago, the Bennitt House. It is named after Sue Bennitt, who lived there for many years.

Bennitt was a longtime trustee and faculty member who died in February 2013.

n Were introduced to Gail Paserba, who is a new trustee. She replaces Jessica Forsythe, who died over the summer. Paserba will serve for six years.

n Nominated trustee Bruce Mazzoni to be secretary of the board of trustees, replacing Forsythe. The vote will be held in October.
