Dirt bike hits deer, boy hurt
CLAY TWP — A 13-year-old township boy was seriously injured Monday night when the dirt bike he was driving hit a deer on Mahood Road, state police said.
The boy, who authorities did not identify, was later flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not known this morning but rescuers said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The boy, who was riding dirt bikes with two other friends near his home, was traveling east on a 2003 Yamaha YZ85 about 7:40 p.m. when a deer jumped out in front of him.
The bike struck the animal and tipped over onto its side, sliding about 100 feet, said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department. The deer was killed.
The boy was wearing a helmet. The crash happened in the 700 block of Mahood Road.
