IN BRIEF

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — Star forward Alex Morgan left the game after spraining her left ankle in the 37th minute, a blow to the United States in its 5-0 win over Guatemala in the CONCACAF Women's Championship on Friday night.

Morgan, who has 49 goals in 77 international appearances, first hurt the ankle during training late last October, then played against Brazil on Nov. 10. She was sidelined until returning to action with her club, the Portland Thorns, on June 7.

She reinjured the ankle in a collision with Guatemala defender Londy Barrios. Morgan tried to put weight on the ankle on the sidelines but was replaced by Christen Press in the 42nd minute.

Morgan was to have a scan to determine the extent of the injury.

Tobin Heath scored twice, and Carli Lloyd, Whitney Engen and Megan Rapinoe had one goal each as the U.S. improved to 2-0 in the group stage of tournament, which serves as qualifying for next year's World Cup. Goalkeeper Hope Solo got her 75th shutout and as the Americans outshot Guatemala 21-0.

Boise State beats Fresno State, 37-27

BOISE, Idaho — Jay Ajayi ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including a 54-yard run on Boise State's clinching drive in the Broncos' 37-27 victory over Fresno State on Friday night.

Boise State (5-2, 3-1 Mountain West) avenged a 41-40 overtime loss to the Bulldogs last season to claim the Milk Can rivalry trophy. Fresno State (3-5, 2-2), winless in Boise since 1984, squandered Marteze Waller's 164-yard rushing performance.

TORONTO — If Jurgen Klinsmann is pushing Michael Bradley to play better, the Toronto FC midfielder doesn't mind. The U.S. coach this week repeated his opinion that Bradley and Clint Dempsey accepted a less challenging level of opposition when they returned to Major League Soccer from European clubs. That sparked an angry response from MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who said Klinsmann should not criticize the league and defended its quality.Bradley says “my record when I've played for the national team and my commitment and contribution is there for anybody to look at and take from it what they want.”Bradley, 27, has made 91 appearances for the U.S. and was a key player at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
