Butler County's great daily newspaper

PTOs offer views on school proposals

In reaction the possible closing of a number of elementary schools in the Butler School District, the Butler Eagle contacted PTOs at each of the schools.

Here are the responses the newspaper got:

Regarding the consolidation issues being proposed by the district, parents are clearly divided in their feelings. On one hand you have concerns of placing young children in a building that was never intended for elementary school use. Not to mention things like large class sizes, long bus rides, and the fear of the unknown. Will the curriculum change? Will specials be cut? Will children who need learning support get the time and attention they need? What will happen to all the teachers and staff who will loose their jobs?On the other hand, you have some who look at this as a step forward. Progress in the form of equal and improved opportunities to each child across the board, regardless of what school they attend. It may be a chance to provide a higher level of education with tools that weren't available previously. One issue that is being felt by many is the lack of ability to participate in the process. Not just parents, but teachers as well. With so much at stake, so many lives being affected, it seems like a small group of people that are solely focused on cutting costs are making these recommendations.Where are the studies of cutting costs in other wasteful areas? Where are the studies on the negative impacts of larger class sizes?I think we can all agree that the most important issue is doing what is right for the children in this community. The absolute one and only right thing to do is what helps our children learn to the best of their ability so that they may reach their full potential. Are our school board members adequately educating themselves on all the topics to be considered to make this decision in the best interests of our children? Can they prove it, so we feel comfortable making this change? Are parents educating themselves as well, so they can speak out on the issues that are important to them?Hopefully, these questions will be addressed in the very near future; to keep morale up is difficult when facing so much uncertainty.Nikki EkasSummit School Organization

The most exciting thing about Broad Street Elementary, Title One and Blue Ribbon school, is the care dedicated to each family, and positive community environment created. The bonds created by students who live within walking distance sparks an investment in the city. The amazing staff includes specialized services for special needs and accelerated learners. The staff goes above and beyond by knowing not just their students but every school child by name along with their family members and needs; the willingness of the principal to patrol the streets and knock on doors, ensuring children are able to attend school on time shows great dedication to the neighborhood. The proximity of the school families allows for one-on-one relationships that could not be replaced. With families always being out in the evening the downtown area has a safe and heavily used place for their children to play because of Broad Street Elementary School. Having a positive cooperative parent presence has helped to deter crime and encourages city living. Many parents in the area who do not have or have limited transportation are so lucky to have the opportunity to participate in our school because of the close walking distance. The positive interaction of local volunteers is a great cost savings along with community investment. The healthy aspect of having children and parents walking results in a reduction of cost and anticipated city bussing congestion. Broad Street Elementary School is a gem among our city that brings light and encouragement to so many people.Removing the positive influence of Broad Street School would be a huge disservice to downtown families as well as remove a safe place for local families to gather.Broad Street Elementary School PTO Consolidation Statement

The Emily Brittain PTO is heartbroken to hear our school is one being considered to close. We are more than a school, we are a family, part of the community. We pride ourselves in the amazing relationships the staff and parents have created to support our students.Emily Brittain has the best teachers. They teach from the heart and do not judge their students because they live in the city. They have compassion and understanding for each student who comes through their doors.Emily Brittain's principal, has a true connection with each of his students, staff members, and parents. He creates an excellent educational environment for his students with the help of his wonderful teachers. His leadership makes Emily Brittain successful as he puts the needs of others in front of his and continues to improve our school. Our hearts break knowing this may all be taken away from us and our children. Our wish is if this happens the parents in our community can be respectful of our children and not point fingers because of where they live. They are children ... our future ...Emily Brittain PTO
