Rockets strike quickly

SR boys get goal 20 seconds into 4-0 D-10 soccer win over McLane

FRANKLIN — Ben Magliocca thinks it is the quickest goal he has ever scored in a soccer game.

Understandably, he was more focused on the fact that his tally just 20 seconds into Slippery Rock's District 10 Class AA boys semifinal against General McLane Wednesday night jump-started the Rockets to a 4-0 victory at Franklin Stadium.

Magliocca drew a foul in the goal box from a General McLane defender, then put a shot past Lancers' goalkeeper Jacob Dobrzynski on the ensuing penalty kick.

“The whole morale of the team just shot up after that,” said Magliocca. “We were so pumped up.”

Ironically, it wasn't the Rockets' quickest score of the season.

“A few weeks ago, Gavin McHattie scored 13 seconds into a game against Sharpsville,” said Slippery Rock coach Kyle Hopkins. “We talked about coming in tonight and scoring as quickly as we could.”

Magliocca wasn't done following his initial score.

In the 35th minute, McHattie went down in the goal box and Magliocca, a senior midfielder, was called upon to take the penalty kick.

He delivered again for a 2-0 edge.

“We've been practicing penalty kicks, especially now that we're in the playoffs,” Hopkins said. “Ben is our No. 1 guy and we have all the confidence in the world in him.”

Just over a minute after his second goal, Magliocca fell to the turf following a foul from General McLane's Noah Hunter, for which the latter received a yellow card.

“I injured my right ankle, I think it's a sprain,” said Magliocca, who struggled to put weight on his right leg following the game. “I'm not 100 percent confident I will be able to play Saturday. But it's the D-10 finals, so I'll see how it feels.”

Slippery Rock (14-5) went on to score two goals in the second half — tallies just 35 seconds apart from Nate Popejoy and Matt Dempsey.

Rockets' goalkeeper Jason Bluedorn made five saves in the shutout.

But most of the Lancers' scoring chances were gobbled up by a stout defense, which included starters Nick Stutz, Matt Johnston, Marty Doyle and Dempsey.

“We needed more composure in the attacking third tonight,” said General McLane coach Josh Hopkins. “We generated scoring chances, but couldn't put the ball in the net.”

The Lancers (11-9) took a pair of yellow cards and the Rockets one.

“It was a physical game, but I thought we handled it well,” Magliocca said.

Dobrzynski stopped eight shots from the Rockets, who will be playing in the district final for the first time since 2011. Slippery Rock last won a district title in 2009.

Due to inclement weather forecasted in Erie on Saturday, the District 10 Class AA boys soccer title game between Slippery Rock and Warren has been moved to an indoor facility at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

A start time has yet to be determined.
