Freeport volleyball bows to Bison, 3-1

COCHRANTON — Freeport's girls volleyball team wasn't short-handed going into its PIAA playoff match with Fort LeBoeuf like last season.

Yellowjackets junior outside hitter Zoe Pawlak, who missed last season's match with a concussion, was back.

Even with a full lineup, Freeport couldn't bring down the District 10 champion Bison, losing a four-set match 23-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-12 Tuesday night at Cochranton High School.

The Yellowjackets, who were the third seed out of the WPIAL, ended their season 20-2.

Fort LeBoeuf swept Freeport in the quarterfinals last year.

“I'm proud of these kids, there aren't many teams in the state that can say they had the kind of season we had,” Yellowjackets coach Tom Phillips said. “We played a lot of good competition this year, hoping it would filter in and help us at this level.”

Freeport was only the second team this season that took the first set from Fort LeBoeuf (18-0).

The Bison couldn't get out of their own way.

Fort LeBoeuf made four attack errors, three net violations and were called for a lift that helped Freeport win, 25-23.

Morgan Ruppersberger and Jessica Kelly led the Yellowjackets with three kills apiece in the first set.

“We made a lot of unforced errors because we wanted everything to be perfect,” Bison coach Lee Ann Johnson said. “The perfect serve, the perfect pass and if it wasn't, we were spastic.”

From the start of the second set, Fort LeBoeuf had no such issues. Larissa Cass led the Bison with 19 kills, including five in the second set.

Fort LeBoeuf pulled away in the second set after a Macy Smolic kill cut its lead to 13-9.

Cass followed with two kills, followed by one from Miranda Gulnac.

An ace by Brenna Houpt extended the lead to 17-9.

Freeport struggled to find its groove on offense. The Yellowjackets made 26 attack errors, including seven in the second and third sets.

“I watched so much film on these guys, I could tell you their shoe sizes,” Phillips said. “We didn't do the things we saw in the films. Every loss we've had this year, we struggled passing the ball. The one glaring thing that will stand out will be our passing.”

The third set went back-and-forth, with Fort LeBoeuf pulling away after a kill from Rupperberger cut the lead to 20-18. Freeport was called for a double touch on the next point that was the start of a 5-0 run to close the match.

Fort LeBoef opened the fourth set on a 4-1 run that helped the Bison put the match away.

Pawlak led Freeport with 11 kills, while Kelly had seven.

“I honestly feel that we peaked early this year,” Phillips said. “I think the last really good, solid game we played was against Fox Chapel. I think we rested on our laurels from there.”
