A suitable tie

Butler's Connor Scott takes a shot at North Allegheny goalkeeper Joseph Hubert in a 3-3 tie game at Blade Runners Ice Complex in Warrendale on Monday, December 1, 2014.

WARRENDALE — North Allegheny's Nathan Taylor stole the puck and immediately went charging unmarked toward Clay Bachman.

Butler's goalie looked at Taylor's stick and made a guess where the puck was headed with less than two minutes remaining in overtime.

Taylor's shot hit Bachman's shoulder, helping the Golden Tornado preserve a 3-3 tie Monday night at BladeRunners.

“He was a righty, so I thought he was going far side the way his stick was curved,” Bachman said. “I just guessed lucky and it turned out for the best.”

Bachman made 36 saves as Butler (5-3-2) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the Tigers.

North Allegheny (7-1-2) had better chances in overtime, but couldn't beat Bachman.

Tigers winger Joesph Zappia III flung a wrist shot that a sprawling Bachman stopped with his blocker 53 seconds into overtime.

“The first thing I did when we went into the locker room was give Clay a big thank you because he played a heck of a game,” Butler coach Patrick Hammonds said. “Our puck management was not what we expect in many parts of this game and because of that we suffered. They got more offensive zone time than we would have liked.”

The Golden Tornado scored first by being aggressive.

Ben Rodgers intercepted a pass on the defensive blue line and went top shelf on a breakaway.

North Allegheny equalized when Erik Chidester scored nine minutes later. The Tigers went ahead 2-1 when Butler had trouble clearing the puck out of the crease and Taylor flipped the puck past Bachman.

North Allegheny extended the lead to 3-1 when Zappia scored on the power play off an assist from Chidester.

“Our team threw a lot of things at them, a couple of different forecheck things,” Tigers coach Mike Bagnato said. “At that point of the game, we were outworking them and finding soft spots in their defense.”

Butler, which finished with 26 shots, also missed opportunities.

The Golden Tornado went 0-for-4 on the power play and misfired on two two-on-one opportunities in the final three minutes of the third period.

“We did a pretty good job of containing them tonight,” Bagnato said. “The key to them was not giving them a lot of room and trying to pressure them. The goals they scored on us were even strength where we were giving them too much room.”

Butler's comeback started with a little luck.

Connor Scott was perfectly positioned to cut the lead to 3-2. Sam Gross played the puck off the end-boards and it caromed to Scott, who was parked in front of the net.

Scott pushed the puck past North Allegheny goalie Joe Hubert — who finished with 23 saves— with 12 minutes left in the second period.

Butler's Brendan Ackelson tied the game with a strong effort. Ackelson had his first shot stopped by Hubert, but cleaned up his rebound with 7:19 left in the second period.

Hammonds believed execution was the key to the turnaround.

“I believe the key is cleaning up some of our mistakes and not deviating from our game-plan,” Hammonds said. “We were focused, stuck to our gameplan and we were able to pull through.”

Bachman wasn't happy with the tie, but was also pleased Butler didn't lose.

The Golden Tornado goalie was pleased with how they responded.

“I thought we were being manhandled physically. I thought we stepped it up once we went down,” Bachman said. “We got a little angry out there, add a little aggression and physical play and it turned into goals.”
