'Boyhood,' 'Birdman' among top Golden Globe nominees

Annual awards show to air Jan. 11 on NBC

“Boyhood,” “Birdman,” “The Imitation Game,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “Selma” were among the top nominees for the 72nd Golden Globe Awards today.

Although the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which presents the Golden Globes, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often don’t agree, the Golden Globes are considered a strong indicator of who will take home Oscar gold in February.

Unlike the Academy Awards, though, the HFPA divides its film nominations into drama and comedy or musical categories.

Among the dramatic film nominees are “Boyhood,” “Selma” and “The Imitation Game,” while “Into the Woods” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” earned comedy or musical feature nominations.

Included in the list of nominees for lead actor in a drama were Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”) and Steve Carell (“Foxcatcher”) while Julianne Moore (“Still Alive”) and Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) were among the lead actress in a drama nominees.

Among the best director nominees were Richard Linklater for “Boyhood,” Alejandro G. Iñárritu for “Birdman” and Wes Anderson for “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

On the TV side, “House of Cards” and “Downton Abbey” were among the series earning nominations.

As previously announced, newlywed George Clooney is this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

NBC will air the Golden Globe Awards live Jan. 11 from the Beverly Hills Hotel with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler returning for their third and supposedly final time as hosts.
