Armstrong forces WPIAL realignment

There are a few teams letting out sighs of relief after the WPIAL football realignment was announced Monday night.

Two winless teams were moved to conferences where they should be more competitive.

The merger of Ford City and Kittanning to form Armstrong High School next year took two teams out of the Allegheny Conference and forced the WPIAL to realign mid-enrollment cycle.

The WPIAL moved Summit Academy back into the Allegheny Conference after the Knights went 0-9 in the Midwestern Athletic Conference last season. Yough, which finished 0-9 in the Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference, was moved to the Big Nine Conference.

The Knights went 5-4 in conference in their last season in the Allegheny Conference in 2013, marking the school’s first ever playoff appearance. Quaker Valley moved in from the Century Conference to take Summit Academy’s place.

Being placed in with schools like Freeport and Apollo-Ridge will help cut down on travel.

“I’m very happy about that move,” Summit Academy coach Steve Sherer said. “I think we were establishing ourselves in that conference and it’s good to be back in that conference. I think we can be competitive in that conference.”

Yough coach Mark Crovak also expressed relief Tuesday that the Cougars were placed into the Big Nine Conference, which includes less travel.

The Cougars lost all eight GAC games last season.

Mars football coach Scott Heinauer is interested to see how the Riverhawks, led by former Kittanning coach Frank Fabian, will fit into an already competitive conference.

“I was at an all-conference football meeting (Tuesday) and we were talking about all the rich tradition Ford City and Kittanning have,” Heinauer said. “That’s concerning to us. Look at Central Valley, they’ve become a powerhouse since Monaca and Center merged.”

Central Valley won WPIAL titles in football in 2010 and 2014. The Vikings were also state runners-up this year.

Six teams from the GAC — Franklin Regional, Gateway, Hampton, Indiana, Knoch and Mars — made the playoffs last season and adding another team creates another instant playoff contender.

“That’s something we’re concerned about,” Heinauer said. “There are a lot of quality coaches in the conference. All these coaches are fundamentally sound and genuinely care about their kids. Adding Fabian, who’s done good things at Kittanning the past few seasons, is concerning to us.”

Here’s a look at how the conferences will look for Butler County in the two impacted conferences.
