NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — Knoch graduate Steven Mowry improved his amateur MMA record to 6-0 by winning a second amateur heavyweight title over the weekend.

Mowry defeated a previously unbeaten opponent at an MMA show in News Philadelphia, Ohio. He plans to fight again in three weeks.

Mowry is also 5-2 as an amateur boxer. He is a Golden Gloves state champion.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin has been named Super Region One Freshman of the Year by the Don Hansen Football Gazette.Martin recorded 16 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss in the 2014 season. He was joined on the all-region first team by running back Shamar Greene and offensive tackle Cory Tucker. Greene rushed for 1,482 yards this past season.Cornerback Admire Carter made second team and place-kicker Mike Wainauskis earned third-team honors.

Alex Alverez scored 33 points and collected 11 rebounds Monday night to lead the Butler County Community College men's basketball team to an 85-83 win at Penn Highlands.The Pioneers (7-10, 3-2) trailed by as many as 16 in the second half. Austin Miller had 23 points and 10 assists while Shae Stobert scored 12 points.
