Pastor gets new duties

Charles Bober
Bober to focus on building of church

CRANBERRY TWP — The Rev. Charles Bober is switching duties in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.

He no longer will be president of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School, according to a news release from the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Instead, Bishop David Zubik has made the decision to allow Bober to dedicate his time to the planned construction of the new $10 million church building for St. Kilian Parish, where he is a pastor.

However, he will continue to serve at the high school as a co-chaplain beside the Rev. Christopher Donley.

“I have taken the opportunity to release him from his responsibilities as president of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School so that he may give his undivided and devoted attention to the needs of St. Kilian Parish, where he serves so admirably as pastor,” Zubik said in the release.

The school will operate without a president, and those responsibilities will be shifted to the newly-hired principal Ann Gaudino, said diocese spokesman the Rev. Ron Lengwin.

“She’s now responsible for both the educational side and the administrative side,” Lengwin said.

Some Catholic high schools in the diocese have a principal and a president, while others have only a principal, depending on the preference of the school board of directors, he said.

However, the circumstance at North Catholic was unique because Bober is a priest who was simultaneously working at the parish. The other schools typically have a layperson as a president.

As co-chaplain, Bober will still teach, say Mass and be available to the students of the high school.

He was initially appointed president of the school in December 2013 as it began preparations to move from Troy Hill in Pittsburgh to the new site in Cranberry Township.

In light of recent fundraising efforts, the parish is preparing designs and hopes to start construction of a new church facility this year. Currently the 10,100 members of the parish attend Masses in the auditorium at North Catholic.
