Butler wrestlers lose to Bethel, 41-27

BUTLER TWP — Nick Roth felt like he made the right decision to come back to wrestling long before he pinned Bethel Park's Devin Andres Thursday night at the Butler Intermediate High School.

Roth's pin during the Golden Tornado's 41-27 non-section Senior Night loss to the Black Hawks was his 14th of the season.

The 182-pound senior has five more pins than any other Butler wrestler and was the only of the four seniors to win against Bethel Park (16-5).

Roth took his junior year off to focus on school. As a sophomore he was on the team, but didn't wrestle any varsity matches.

“I decided last August (to come back),” said Roth, who is 19-10 this season. “It was a bit weird coming back to it, but it came back in a week or so.”

Golden Tornado coach Scott Stoner was surprised when Roth showed up at a practice to come back out. Stoner was happy to have him come back.

“He was timid about the way he approached me and I said 'This deserves a hug. Let's get going. I'm glad to have you back',” Stoner said.

Roth got taken down first by Andres before scoring a reversal and takedown to grab control. He finished the pin with 16 seconds left in the first period to cut the Golden Tornado's deficit to 9-6.

“I think I've improved a lot in the beginning,” Roth said. “I didn't want to look back later in life and say 'Why didn't I wrestle?'”

Butler (10-6) lost the first two matches and never led against Bethel Park. The Golden Tornado lost six points at 195 on a bluff by Stoner.

He chose not to send Justin Johnson out, thinking Bethel Park was going to forfeit 195 and bump Adam Montgomery to 220.

The Black Hawks kept Montgomery there, opting instead to forfeit at 220.

Sam Dietrich gave Butler life by rallying from a 4-0 first-period deficit to win 6-5 in double overtime at 126 pounds. Dietrich rode out Ben Yantek and then escaped to earn the win.

Scott Dietrich followed with a pin to cut the deficit to 30-27.

“After the first period, I noticed he looked pretty gassed and started to get tired,” Sam Dietrich said. “I tried to bump it up more, but I got the blood time and he got some breath. I got some breath, too. I tried to keep up the pace and wear him down.”

Stoner said he would like to see Sam Dietrich to be more aggressive.

“There haven't been a lot of positives,” Stoner said. “Tonight was one. He gave up a lead early and got down 4-0. That's one of the things we need to address with his wrestling is getting the first takedown.”

Jason Montgomery (138) and Noah Seeberger (145) both scored close decisions for Bethel Park to seal the win.

The Black Hawks won most of the close matches, eking out a 2-0 win at 120 when Korey Patterson scored a first-period takedown.

“That's the way Korey is in practice,” Bethel Park coach Bob Stewart said. “We try to push him away from doing it because it goes the other way. He preserved because he knew it was going to be a tough match because (Foust) is a senior and he's a freshman.”
