Whitmer's buzzer-beating shot keeps SR's playoff hopes alive

Mars' Reed McDonough wins the 200 meter freestyle against Pine-Richland at Pine-Richland High School.

Jake Whitmer hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to keep the Slippery Rock High boys basketball team's playoff hopes alive after a dramatic 57-56 win over Franklin Tuesday night.

Whitmer scored 16 points for the Rockets (11-10, 7-8).

Brady Kadlubek and Ryan Dutton each added 14 points for Slippery Rock, which faces another must-win against Sharon at home Friday night.

Karns City 69, Union 56 — David Olszak scored 28 points as the Gremlins bounced back from an overtime loss to Moniteau 24 hours earlier for a home win over the Golden Knights in the regular-season finale.

Dalton Callihan added 14 points and eight rebounds and Christian Turner pitched in 11 points and nine boards for Karns City (12-9).

Lucas Bowser led Union (12-10) with 14 points. Hank Murphy also reached double digits with 11 points for the Golden Knights.

Swimming

John Wilson won a pair of events to lead the Knoch boys to a 99-75 win over Shady Side Academy.

The Knights' girls fell to SSA, 92-79, despite wins by Brooke Zukowski, Lydia Walls and Abby Jones.

Both Knoch swim teams finished the season 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the section.

Last week, Knoch swam in a tri-meet against Mars and Freeport. Those scores are as follows:

Wrestling

Scott Dietrich and Jeremiah Bortmas went 5-0 at 132 and 160 pounds, respectively, as Butler placed second out of 11 teams at the Penn State-Fayette Duals last weekend.

The Golden Tornado defeated Laurel Highlands 66-10, Connellsville 37-33, Albert Gallatin 66-9 and Woodridge (Ohio) 42-36, the latter match being for second place. Caleb Baxter had a pin to break the 36-36 deadlock in that match.

Butler (15-7) defeated Connellsville for the first time ever. The Tornado's lone loss was 42-21 to Latrobe.

“Our team grew up a lot in that tournament,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said. “We're jelling and meshing as a unit at the right time.”

Bortmas had three pins and Dietrich two on the day. Four Butler wrestlers went 4-1 in the tournament — Connor Foust, Sam Dietrich, Baxter and Nick Roth — with Baxter securing three pins.

The Tornado return to action Feb. 21 in the section tournament at Fox Chapel.

Indoor Track and Field

Butler's boys and girls competed in an open high school invitational over the weekend at Youngstown State University.

The Golden Tornado boys 4x200 meter relay team placed third, the 4x400 fourth and the 4x800 fifth. Medaling for Butler were Jeff Bailey, Bob Burdine, Connor Frost, Josh Rader, Patrick Fullerton, Adam Knauer, Brandon Critchlow, John Yannotty, Nicoli Peterson, Lamont Hoy, Joe Greaves and Brady Hartle.

On the girls side, Emily Horstman placed eighth in the 200 meters and anchored the 4x200 relay team to a fifth-place finish with Savannah Miller, Adrianna McGarrah and Shana Hoy. The 4x400 relay team of Hoy, Hanna Sheaffer, Kelly Kabay and Horstman was fifth, the 4x800 relay of Kabay, Emma LeMay, Erin LeMay and Michaela Brydon sixth.

Freshman McGarrah placed seventh in the long jump. There were more than 1,200 athletes from Ohio and Pennsylvania at the meet.

Private Schools

North Main Street Church 43, First Baptist Christian 39 (boys) — Trevor Barnhart tallied 17 points and 14 rebounds for FBC while Javier Iglesia had 16 points, five steals and five assists. Cameron Karnes had 11 rebounds.
