Derailed train shuts down railroad line
CENTER TWP — A derailed train carrying iron ore has shut down the railroad line.
Patrick Waldron, a spokesman with the Canadian National Railway Co., said that the 27 of the train’s 71 cars derailed at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on tracks that travel underneath Route 308. He said the material in the trains was not hazardous.
There were no injuries.
He said this afternoon that CN crews are cleaning up the accident and repairing the rails. He said what caused the derailment is under investigation.
Waldron said that some of the cars had tipped over, leaving some iron ore scattered.
He said the rail line will be closed until repairs are complete, but he did not know when work would be finished.
The train was traveling south from Conneaut, Ohio, to Pittsburgh.
This afternoon, workers and cranes could be seen working to clean up the scene. Several cars appeared to be well off the tracks and on a hill adjacent to the tracks.
The tracks are adjacent to Stony Run and go under a bridge carrying Route 308.
