Canadian National Railway workers use cranes Thursday to clean up the scene of a train derailment off Route 308 in Center Township. Twenty-seven of the train's 71 cars derailed about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. No one was injured.

CENTER TWP — A derailed train shut down a railroad line running through the township.

The train carrying iron ore derailed Wednesday night, leaving no one injured.

Patrick Waldron, a spokesman with the Canadian National Railway, said 27 of the train’s 71 cars derailed about 9:30 p.m. on tracks that travel underneath Route 308. He said the material in the cars was not hazardous.

He said Thursday afternoon that CN crews were cleaning up the accident and fixing the rails. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, he said.

Waldron said some of the cars had tipped over, leaving some iron ore scattered.

The line will be closed until repairs are complete, but Waldron did not know when that will be done.

The train was traveling south from Conneaut, Ohio, to Pittsburgh.

On Thursday afternoon, workers and cranes could be seen working to clean up the site. Several cars were well off the tracks and on a hill next to the tracks. The track is adjacent to Stony Run and goes under a bridge carrying Route 308.
