Ex-Pirate Hanrahan out for season

SARASOTA, Fla. — All offseason, the Tigers insisted, they couldn’t count on him.

And after getting sidelined on Feb. 22 because of soreness in his arm, count Joel Hanrahan out.

The veteran right-handed reliever will undergo a second Tommy John surgery, the team announced on Wednesday, ending his tenure with the team as he was released.

“Unfortunately you see it in this business way too often,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. “And in recent years, it’s been even more frequent with these Tommy John surgeries so it’s certainly unfortunate for Joel and unfortunate for us because he’s a guy that, if he’s healthy, he could help us.”

Hanrahan, 33, was unable to progress from his surgery in 2013 to the point of pitching pain-free. He traveled to Dallas on Tuesday to get an opinion from orthopedic specialist Dr. Keith Meister, who will perform the surgery on him on March 18.

“Really,” Ausmus said, “To go through a second one probably makes it even tougher.”

Hanrahan has a career 3.85 ERA in seven big-league seasons with the Nationals, Pirates and Red Sox. He signed one-year, minor-league deals with the Tigers in each of the last two seasons.
