Mars' Rinaman shows his range

ADAMS TWP — Those familiar with the WPIAL track scene know all about Ori Rinaman's abilities in hurdle events.

On his home track Friday at the Mars Track and Field Invitational, the senior showed he can be versatile too.

After having already won the 110-meter hurdles, Rinaman stepped outside the box and competed in the 400 dash, delivering an effort of 51.81 seconds that topped the field.

He normally competes in the 300 hurdles, but bypassed the event Friday.

“I compete in the 4x400 relay, but figured I'd try the open 400 today,” he said. “There were a lot of very fast guys, including (Avonworth/Northgate's) Kenny Baurle, but I was just running against myself, pushing myself.”

Rinaman won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.59. He admits that his time is much more important than any hardware he earns in the process.

“Medals aren't a big deal for me,” said the Shippensburg University recruit. “I'm looking to drop time. Even today, my form (in the hurdles) was okay, but I still need to work on it.”

Rinaman placed fifth in WPIAL Class AAA last year in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300.

“It would mean a lot for me to finish strong in my high school career.”

Logan Moroney was due for a win.

Karns City's sprinter placed second in the 100 dash at last week's Butler Invite and again here on Friday. In both efforts combined, he was runner-up by just .48 seconds. But he tasted victory in the 200 after a 23.06, a time he readily admits wasn't his best effort.

“It was a pretty bad time. I've been running below 23 all year,” he said. “But I'm still satisfied because I ran a lot of events before the 200 today — the 4x100, semis and finals of the 100 and semis of the 200 — and I was pretty tired going into the finals for the 200. I want to get down to the 21s. As the weather gets warmer, I'll start to get better times.”

In the girls' invite, Mars' Tori Kopchak captured a first-place medal in the 400 dash, finishing the event in 59.5.

Not bad for a girl who didn't run track last year.

“I played lacrosse instead, but came back to track this spring,” she said. “I do it to stay in shape for soccer, but I really enjoy it. To win here at home against really good competition, it's a big deal for me.”

Knoch's girls began the meet with a victory in the 4x800 relay. The quartet of Mandi Moxie, Ashlyn Carlsson, Lauren Karenbauer and Jenna Shelton posted a time of 9:57.38.

Rachael Wittmer has also seen time on the relay this season and helped the Knights place sixth at Butler last week.

“We all just need to work on our pace,” said Karenbauer. “For me personally, I have to keep my first lap under control. We've been pretty strong all year and just want to keep improving.”
