Throwers establish Moniteau monopoly

KANE — Thanks to Brendon Stamm and Maura Kimmel, Moniteau held a monopoly in the shot put and discus at the District 9 Class AA Track and Field Championships.

Stamm topped the boys field in both events and Kimmel did so in the girls’ competition on an overcast and rainy Friday at Kane High School.

“It was a great day for Moniteau,” said Warriors’ throwing coach Ryan Protzman. “A lot of their success came down to the work they’ve put in. To start with, we do a lot of heavy lifting, but as the season goes on, we focus more on speed and explosiveness. It seemed to work out for us.”

Stamm set personal records in both events — 50 feet, 9.5 inches in the shot put and 151-11 in the discus, which is where his day began.

His effort in the discus was more than 11 feet better than runner-up John English of Kane. Stamm placed second in the district last year.

“I had my eyes on winning the discus today,” Stamm said. “It came down to mental preparation. I hate to lose.”

Several hours elapsed between his discus win and the shot put competition.

“I made sure I was warmed up,” he said. “Absolutely, I felt as confident going into the shot put as I did the discus. You can always do better, but considering the weather, it was a great day.”

Confidence abounded with Kimmel as well.

She entered the girls discus seeded first by more than nine feet and won the event with a throw of 133-1.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m full of myself, but I knew the gap was big and I expected to win today,” she said. “I started off slow this year in the discus, but I’ve really picked it up the last few weeks. I broke the school record a few weeks ago, then broke my own record (now 139-6). It seemed to take some weight off of me.”

Kimmel won the shot put after a performance of 38-5.5. She heads to the state meet with automatic berths thanks to her district titles, but both of her efforts would have gotten her there regardless of place.

“I’m happy with that,” she said. “I want to medal (top eight) at states. I want to do extremely well in the discus. It’s my best event this year.”

Karns City’s boys earned a pair of district titles in the field — Tyler Dunn in the high jump (6-0) and Chandler Turner in the triple jump (41-9).

Dunn has been honing his craft for just over a year.

“I was fooling around with the high jump late in the season last year,” he said. “I was doing pretty well with it and figured I’d join the team. I jumped my best, a 6-1, last week at the Redbank Valley Invitational. If I had started earlier, I would be jumping even higher. I still need to work on things, like arching my back more.”

Turner’s best triple jump last year was a 37-8 and that was not good enough to qualify for the district meet.

“My improvement comes from practicing. I worked a lot on my form,” said Turner. “It feels great to win here. My legs felt good today, like they had springs in them. I saw what Nick Popoleo (top seed from North Clarion at 41-10) was able to do this season and I’m just trying to match that.”
