Boros in U.S. Senior Open

Saxonburg resident Joe Boros will be foregoing golf carts for the next month during his rounds at Treesdale Country Club.

The club pro needs to get in shape for the United State Golf Association’s U.S. Senior Open from June 22-28 at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif.

Boros, who is the club pro at Treesdale, won a bid to the tournament by shooting a 1-under 70 Wednesday afternoon at Wildwood Golf Club.

Boros edged out Bob Friend, who shot a 71.

“I said to my caddy I’ll be walking a lot more rounds,” said Boros, 52, who is a 1980 graduate of A-C Valley High School. “At Treesdale, it’s hilly and there’s so much distance in-between holes. I’ll try to do more walking and be in better shape.”

Boros didn’t think his round would be good enough to win.

He carded three birdies and two bogeys.

“There were no leaderboards, so you have to be better than the guy you were playing with,” Boros said. “Hopefully, it was good enough to win. I actually thought somebody would have shot 4-under par today or something like that.”

It was the first win in three tries for Boros to qualify for the Senior Tour. His previous attempts to qualify for the PGA Tour came up short.

“I’ve tried to qualify for the tour, I missed by two shots,” Boros said. “That year in the qualifier, I played with Tom Layman, Lee Jansen and Mark Brooks. I had opportunities.”

Boros is excited for the opportunity ahead. His goal for June is simple: win.

A few hours after he qualified, he went on Del Paso’s website and was able to look at the course’s pictures.

“I’ve already looked,” Boros said. “I went through and it looks like a nice golf course.”
