Vote coming on lake funds

Cash needed for fish habitat

Butler County Commissioners will vote Wednesday on whether to release more than $100,000 in Marcellus Shale Legacy Fund money for long-awaited fish habitat and jetty improvement projects.

The project by Glade Run Lake Conservancy includes improving fish habitat at Glade Run Lake as it is refilled, and also the refurbishment of the location’s fishing jetty.

Sigmund Pehel III, the president of the conservancy’s board of directors, said the group needs the funds now because those plans have to happen in concert with the rebuilding of the dam.

“All these projects need to be done at the same time,” Pehel said. “Once water flows back into (the lake) there’s no going back.”

Glade Run Lake was drained in 2011, after its dam was found to be leaking and presenting a safety hazard downstream.

Commissioners will vote Wednesday on amending a 2014 resolution pledging the shale legacy fund monies to the conservancy.

The amendment that will “modify the use” of the legacy fund money, which Pehel said would be used in conjunction with grant money from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Pehel said the conservancy was still working with the commission to secure those funds.

He said the two projects, along with the $3 million dam rehabilitation, are expected to make Glade Run more attractive destination for bass fishermen.

“These projects will basically give the park a new face lift and, we think, make it the premier bass fishing destination in the area, if not the state,” Pehel said.

Pehel said the lake used to draw about 16,000 visitors and generated $1.6 million in economic activity each year. The conservancy wants to increase both those figures by 25 percent.

County Commissioner Dale Pinkerton signaled on Monday his support for the projects, saying the improvements would be a “tremendous addition to that end of our county.”
