BUTLER TWP — With his team's final tune-up in the books, Butler girls soccer coach Steve Perri is eyeing a strong start in section play.

The Golden Tornado hosted Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic Wednesday night and overwhelmed the Trojanettes, 9-0.

Perri said Butler's strength this season lies with the offense and that was evident early on against CWNC.

McKenna Robinson scored twice and Brittnie Spithaler added another score, all within the first 10 minutes of the game.

“Our talent up front took over,” said Perri. “Liz Simms, Aidyn Trettel, Robinson and Spithaler, they are going to be a match-up nightmare for whoever we play. We are going to score goals.

“We did lose our back four and a holding midfielder to graduation and we've been working on how to stay defensively sound.”

Anna Voelker is back and starting in net for the second straight year. She made one save against the Trojanettes before giving way to Mariah Geibel and Paige Miller.

Butler (2-1) opened the season last week with a 4-3 win over a strong South Park team and a 3-2 loss to Villa Maria, a perennial power in District 10.

The Golden Tornado open Section 1-AAAA play at home against Shaler on Monday.

“The girls have talked about their goals for this season,” added Perri. “They not only want to make the playoffs, but want to challenge for a section title. We still have some things to work on, but I don't think that's too lofty for us.”

Spithaler, a senior, led the team in scoring the last two years. But on Wednesday, the goals were spread out. Gabrielle Boden, Roxanna Stalnaker and Robinson each scored twice. Emma Starr and Simms both added one goal.

Wednesday's contest marked the third straight to begin the season in which CWNC (Class A) faced a team from a higher class. The Trojanettes previously defeated a pair of Class AAA programs — Belle Vernon (1-0) and West Mifflin (4-0).

“It's a great way to find out how competitive we are,” said CWNC coach Emily Karr. “It gives us play that's a little more physical and it forces us to make mistakes, which hopefully, I can correct.”

The Trojanettes are working for a return trip to the postseason. They are trusting freshman goalkeeper Andrea Bean to help them get there. She had 10 saves against Butler.

“She's handled the pressure really well so far,” said Karr. “She's becoming more confident and the girls love her.”
