Butler girls rally, stun Tigers, 2-1
Alyssa Lapusnak scored off a corner kick from McKenna Robinson with 19 seconds left to complete a wild comeback for the Butler girls soccer team in a 2-1 win over North Allegheny Monday night.
Brittnie Spithaler scored to tie the match at 1-1 with three minutes remaining to set up the Lapusnak winner.
The Golden Tornado (9-6, 5-4) close out the section schedule against Seneca Valley at home Wednesday.
Mars 4, Franklin Regional 0 — Maggie Williams scored three goals as the Planets clinched the WPIAL Section 1-AAA title.
Caroline Wroblewski also scored a goal and added an assist.
Taylor Hamlett had two assists for the Planets (12-1, 9-0), who notched their 11th shutout of the season.
Mars has not surrendered a goal in section play this season.
Slippery Rock 9, Sharon 0 — Kayla Daugherty scored three goals and Ellie Reiser and Ashley Shea each added a pair of goals to help the Rockets to this rout.
Hannah Burtner and Claudia Allen also scored for Slippery Rock (9-6, 6-3).
Freeport 0, Springdale 0 — With the tie, the Yellowjackets clinched the WPIAL Section 2-AA title.
Freeport (12-2-1, 9-0-1), which won its second consecutive section title for the first time in school history, will host Highlands Wednesday.
Hampton 4, Knoch 3 — Lindsie Galbreath scored two goals and Jenna Stallsmith also found the net for the Knights (10-6).
Girls Tennis
Emily Gordon completed a different kind of sweep.
The Grove City senior defeated Sarah DeMarco of Villa Maria, 6-2, 6-2, to win her fourth District 10 Class AA girls tennis title.
The win gives Gordon a chance to accomplish another rare feat.
She will try to become the first District 10 girls tennis player to repeat as PIAA champion since 1987.
Teddi Isherwood and Reagan Sommariva both won their first-round section singles matches for Butler, but each fell in the quarterfinals.
Isherwood downed Sam Vachino of Moon 10-4 before falling to Alyssa Sarver of Pine-Richland, 10-3.
Sommariva swept Allison Brazer of Seneca Vally, 10-0, before losing to Ashley Huang of North Allegheny, 10-0.
Girls Golf
The WPIAL Class AAA team semifinals, which featured Mars and Butler, was postponed due to inclement weather.
The WPIAL will hold the team finals Thursday at Cedarwood Red Golf Course.
