Tractor-trailer fire closes Route 228
MIDDLESEX TWP — Route 228 West is closed for a quarter-mile stretch between Route 8 and Old Route 8 after tires on a tractor-trailer caught fire around 12:47 p.m.
The tractor-trailer flatbed owned by William Brown Trucking in Valencia was carrying steel beams east on Route 228 when a rear tire on the trailer blew according to Middlesex Township police. The blowout is believed to have somehow caused a fire on two of the back wheels of the trailer.
The fire burned through the back of the aluminum trailer, police say.
The rest of the trailer and the cab were untouched, according to police.
The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured. Police did not immediately release his name.
The Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department along with both the Middlesex and Penn police departments responded to the scene.
One lane of Route 228 West was opened to traffic about 1:30 p.m. The other lane is expected to be open about 2 p.m.
