Mars girls post another shutout
Mars will be playing for the WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer championship.
Before any opponent can beat the Planets, it has to figure out how to score on them. Mars (17-0-1) blanked Belle Vernon, 2-0, in the semifinal round Monday night for their seventh consecutive shutout.
“Our defense plays as a back four, not as four individual players,” Mars coach Blair Gerlach said. We're pretty aggressive back there and we play as a unit.”
Ellie Coffield scored her 22nd goal of the season and Taylor Hamlett netted her 28th in the victory. Mars will face Plum (17-1-1) — a 1-0 winner over West Allegheny in the other semifinal — in the championship game on a date and and time to be announced.
Mars has won 13 straight ganmes overall. The Planets have scored 39 goals during the current shutout streak.
Norwin 1, Seneca Valley 0 — Norwin (18-1) ended the Raiders' season by winning its 11th straight game in this WPIAL Class 4A semifinal.
Seneca Valley ends its season with a 13-4-2 record.
North Catholic 4, South Park 0 — The Trojanettes (13-4) advanced to the WPIAL Class 2A championship game at a date and time to be announced.
North Catholic won its fifth straight game, outscoring the opposition 26-2 during that run. The Trojanettes will play Yough — a 3-0 winner over Freeport — in the WPIAL title game.
Mercyhurst Prep 1, Slippery Rock 0 — The Rockets' season ended at 16-3-1. Mercyhurst Prep advanced to Wednesday's District 10 Class 2A championship game.
Moniteau runners Hannah Burgoon and Jenna Blauser have qualified for the PIAA State Championship race this Saturday in Hershey.Burgoon placed fourth in the District 9 meet last weekend at Ridgway with a time of 21 minutes, 20 seconds. Blauser placed fifth in 21:23.
