IRVING, Texas - Sergio Garcia made a two-putt par on the 18th hole to win the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday.Garcia squandered a two-shot lead and closed with a 1-over 71, then survived the sloppy finish by making a par on the first playoff hole as Robert Damron and Dudley Hart self-destructed.Garcia became the first player in 11 years to win the Byron Nelson despite failing to break par in the final round. Hart, who birdied three of the final five holes to shoot 67, exited with a double bogey on the playoff hole.Damron lagged his 50-foot putt to within 4 feet in the playoff, but pulled the par putt to the left. It was a tough ending for Damron, who got into the playoff by holing a 7-iron from the 15th fairway for eagle and closing with a 66.All three finished at 10-under 270.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Lorena Ochoa won her first LPGA Tour event, carding a 4-under-par 68 for a one-stroke victory over Wendy Ward at the inaugural Franklin American Mortgage Championship on Sunday.Ochoa, who became the first Mexican to win an LPGA tournament, had five birdies and a bogey in the final round, finishing at 16-under 272.Ward closed with a 5-under 67.
ROME - Amelie Mauresmo beat Jennifer Capriati 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to win the Italian Open on Sunday for her second straight title.Mauresmo also defeated Capriati en route to the German Open title a week ago.Mauresmo, the runner-up at Rome's clay-court tournament three of the past four years, closed out the win on her second match point, when Capriati's backhand sailed long.
RICHMOND, Va. - Dale Earnhardt Jr. gambled on tires and fuel and made it pay off Saturday night, outrunning Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte over the last 45 laps for his third victory of the season.The Nextel Cup points leader took the lead when Tony Stewart and most of the other contenders pitted for tires and fuel with 54 laps to go in the Chevy American Revolution 400.Earnhardt made the move look brilliant, gradually building a lead of more than 3 seconds and beating Johnson by 1.481 seconds.
