Daniel H. Core Jr.
Daniel H. Core Jr., 86, of Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, died May 10 at Passavant where he lived since 1998.
Born June 11, 1917, in Ford City, he was the son of Amarilla Getze and Daniel Brodhead Heiner Core, and was a direct descendant of Gen. Daniel Brodhead, commander of Fort Pitt in 1777.
He was a 1940 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College, he served as an alumni trustee and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1947, from which his studies had been interrupted by 52 months of World War II service, where he attained the rank of captain in the Army Finance Corps with duty in the Philippines and Japan.
He was admitted to the Allegheny County Bar in 1948 and accepted appointment to the legal department of U.S Steel Corp., first with the Pittsburgh Limestone Co
later known
as Michigan Limestone Co., and then as secretary of the U.S. Steel Homes Credit Corp.
He was secretary of the Bahamas Cement Co. and three off-shore shipping subsidiaries, Navios Corp., Navigen Corp. and New Providence Corp., in Nassau, Bahamas. He returned to Pittsburgh in transportation and real estate duties in corporate headquarters.
He was resident general counsel for The Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad until his retirement in 1982.
He was chairman of the March of Dimes of Floyd County, Ind.; active in the Nassau Players; a member of the Duluth United Way Speaker's Bureau; and a board member of the Minnesota Ballet in Duluth. He was a 50-year member of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania bar associations.
His past memberships included the Minnesota Bar Association, Bahamas Country Club, Nassau Golf Club, the East Hill Club and, until recently, the Kitchi Gammi Club and the St. Paul Athletic Association.
Surviving are his wife, Amy McKay Core of Zelienople, whom he married May 13, 1944; two sons, Gordon McKay Core (Lois) of Washington, Pa., and Philip Kennedy Core of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Amy Core-French (L. Russell) of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and granddaughters Sarah Elizabeth and Rachel Alyssa Core.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Core Milling, and a brother, Jesse Franklin Core.
CORE JR. - Friends of Daniel H. Core, Jr., who died Monday, May 10, 2004, will be received at a memorial gathering at 3 p.m. May 23 at Passavant Retirement Center, 401 S. Main St., Zelienople. Arrangements were made by the CREMATION SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA, Harrisburg.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
