On May 23, Air Force Lt. Col. Joseph Dill assumed command of 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron, Wurzburg, Germany.

The 1978 alumnus of Butler High School is a 1984 graduate of Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, and received his silver wings after graduating from Air Force navigator training at Mather Air Force Base, Calif. In 1999, he graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and taught at the war college for one year following his graduation.

During his career, he has served as a navigator on the stealth bomber and has served two tours in Saudi Arabia. On May 28, he left for his second tour of duty in Iraq.

He is the son of Lois McKnight of Butler.

Derek Michael, son of Brett Michael and Chris Thompson of Karns City, entered the delayed entry program for the Air Force on Feb. 4.

The 2002 graduate of Karns City High School shipped to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on May 18.

Marine Corps Pfc. Dale Miller, son of Susan Womer of Valencia and Mark Miller of Pittsburgh, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Miller is a 2002 graduate of Mars High School.

During June, Edward Heeter Sr., the Governor's Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center regional representative, will have office hours at the Butler Armory, 250 Kreiss Road, Room 113, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dates and times are subject to change.
