Man gives up after holding police at bay
CONCORD TWP - A Connoquenessing Township man remains jailed after a six-hour armed standoff with police ended peacefully Friday night.
Benjamin Davidson, 26, of 659 Dick Road is being held without bond on a probation violation. State police today are expected to file other charges stemming from the standoff.
Police were called about 2:45 p.m. to a Springdale Church Road home in Concord Township where Davidson was reportedly holed up at the house of a relative.
Authorities had been looking for Davidson since Wednesday on a probation detainer issued to the Butler County Adult Probation office.
A detainer is a legal order allowing the probation department to re-arrest and detain someone suspected of violating their probation or parole, pending a hearing on the matter.
Police said Davidson was wanted for failing to report to his probation officer.
The defendant earlier Friday called police after learning that authorities were looking for him.
"Davidson was distraught over the detainer being issued and advised that he would hurt himself," said Trooper David Bayer in a news release.
Police issued a missing person's advisory and on Friday found the defendant at the Springdale Church Road home.
The state police Special Emergency Response Team was called in after authorities determined Davidson had barricaded himself in the house and was reportedly armed with two handguns, police said.
Negotiations continued for several hours before he surrendered to police at 9 p.m. No shots were fired and Davidson never threatened officers with the guns, police said.
Troopers recovered a .25-caliber pistol and a revolver from the house. Both guns were previously reported stolen, police said.
Davidson has a lengthy criminal record in Butler County, and is awaiting sentencing next month stemming from a burglary on Dec. 22, 2003.
He pleaded guilty July 14 to charges of burglary and theft in the case and a day later was released after posting a bond for $5,000 bail, according to court records.
The defendant in 2001 was convicted of receiving stolen property, driving with a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to time served in county prison following his arrest.
In 2000, Davidson was arrested for theft, a charge to which he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 years' probation.
He was arrested in 1998 in four separate cases, including for possession of drug paraphernalia, underage drinking and public drunkenness. He pleaded guilty in that case and paid $582 in fines and court costs.
He also was convicted in 1998 for burglary and was sentenced to 30 to 60 days in county prison, followed by a year's probation. Davidson later violated his probation and was sentenced to 3 to 6 months in jail.
In the other 1998 cases, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license, and was sentenced to 2 to 4 days in county prison and fined $500; and he pleaded guilty to retail theft and was fined $200 and placed on six months' probation.
Davidson in 1997 was arrested for disorderly conduct. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $300.
