OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Deion Sanders is back in the NFL, this time with the Baltimore Ravens.
The seven-time Pro Bowl defensive back passed his physical and formally ended his retirement Tuesday by signing a one-year contract laden with incentives. Sanders will practice with the team for the first time today and expects to play in the Ravens' season opener Sept. 12 against the Cleveland Browns.
Sanders, 37, played cornerback in his prime, but will be used as a fifth defensive back in Baltimore.
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Mats Sundin had a goal and two assists to lead Sweden past Germany 5-2 Tuesday in the World Cup of Hockey opener for both teams.Sundin's goal was a gem, as he whipped a powerful backhander from the right circle past goalie Olaf Kolzig 1:59 into the second period to give Sweden a 2-1 lead.
Butler residents Eugene Scott, Phill Kriley and Chris Miller won the Perfect Swing longest drive contest Sunday.Scott won the Adult Division with a drive of 275 yards, Kriley took the Senior Division with a drive. Miller captured the Junior Division with a drive of 263 yards.
John Aubrey Sr. took second place in the Tri-State PGA Section Senior Championship, finishing up Tuesday at Valley Brook Country Club.Aubrey shot a 70-71 for a 141, three strokes behind winner Bob Ford.
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers released six players Tuesday, including former first-round draft pick and former Detroit Lions starting cornerback Terry Fair, bringing the team to its roster limit.Drafted one pick ahead of Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss in 1998, Fair has been troubled by injuries most of his career. He was hobbled by a hamstring injury during training camp and was cut after reaching a settlement with the Steelers.Also cut Tuesday were receivers Freddie Milons and Brian Robinson, defensive tackle David Upchurch, rookie free agent linebacker Allen Augustin and linebacker Nathaniel Adibi, the Steelers' fifth-round pick last season.
