DALLAS - A uniform worn by New York York Yankees star Mickey Mantle in 1963 was sold in a public auction for $143,400, according to Heritage Galleries of Dallas.
The jersey was one of the highlights of the sale conducted online and in Long Beach, Calif., on Friday and Saturday.
The auction also included a Sandy Koufax game-worn jersey from the Dodgers' final season in Brooklyn that sold for $77,675.
The "Thrilla in Manila" boxing gloves worn by Joe Frazier when he fought Muhammad Ali in the Philippines in October 1975 sold for $23,900.
Also, a Ted Williams game-used glove sold for $48,995 and the first baseball hit for a home run by Willie McCovey went for $17,925.
OAKVILLE, Ontario - Vijay Singh won another dramatic duel, beating Mike Weir on the third playoff hole at the Canadian Open on Sunday.Weir had three putts to become the first Canadian in 50 years to win his national title - a 10-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole, a 25-footer for eagle on No. 18 in the playoff, and a 5-footer on No. 17 at the second playoff hole.Weir pulled his tee shot on No. 18 for the third playoff hole, laid up and then hit his approach in the water. Some 25,000 fans let out a collective groan, and gave begrudging applause when Singh three-putted from the fringe for par.Singh had a 3-under 69 and Weir shot 72 as both players finished at 9-under 275 at the end of regulation. Joe Ogilvie had a 69 to finish third, two shots behind at 277.Singh won his seventh title of the year - only Tiger Woods (twice), Jack Nicklaus (twice) and Johnny Miller have won that often since 1970.
RICHMOND, Va. - Jeremy Mayfield raced to his first victory in more than four years Saturday night, taking the Chevrolet 400 at Richmond International Raceway after leader Kurt Busch ran out of gas eight laps from the finish.The victory locked Mayfield into NASCAR's race for the Nextel Cup title in the final qualifying event.But Mayfield was the only driver to jump into the chase. Kasey Kahne, his teammate at Evernham Motorsports, finished 12th and dropped out of the top 10.Jamie McMurray felt the same way, finishing in ninth place and narrowly missing the chase. He's 11th in the standings, but just 31 points out of the 400-point window that would have qualified him.
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Annika Sorenstam won her fifth LPGA Tour event of the year, closing with a 1-under 70 for a four-shot victory at the John Q. Hammons Classic.Sorenstam had three birdies and a bogey in the final round for a 9-under 204 total, winning the event for the second time. She had a three-stroke lead entering the final round.
