Division and wild-card races that went to the last weekend of the season helped Major League Baseball set a season attendance record Sunday.

With 550,758 fans at Sunday's 15 games, the attendance for the season rose to 73,022,969. The record was set in 2000 with attendance of 72,748,970. This season's total was 8.1 percent higher than last year's total of 67,568,397.

This season's average of 30,401 was the second highest for a full season, eclipsed only by the 1993 average of 31,337. Two expansion teams, Arizona and Tampa Bay, have been added since 1993.

Seven teams broke franchise records, including the New York Yankees, whose attendance of 3,775,292 was the majors' highest. The Yankees also led in road attendance with 3,308,666. Their combined attendance set an AL record.

Other teams breaking season records were Boston, Anaheim, Houston, the Cubs, Philadelphia and San Diego. The Dodgers' attendance, 3,488,283, was the second highest in the majors and their highest since 1983.

Layna Heilman-Houser earned all-tournament honors as the Slippery Rock University volleyball team won four of five matches in the two-day Holiday Inn Classic at Clarion University over the weekend.Heilman-Houser had 65 kills, 15 aces, 68 digs and nine blocks for The Rock (11-11).Lindsay Weber added 50 kills, four aces and 96 digs for SRU.The Rock shared the tournament title with Clarion.

TORONTO - John Cerutti, a former Toronto pitcher and current Blue Jays television announcer, was found dead in his hotel room, the team said Sunday. He was 44.It was believed Cerutti died of natural causes and foul play was not suspected, the Blue Jays said in a statement.

THOMASTOWN, Ireland - Ernie Els outlasted Thomas Bjorn in a brilliantly played duel at Mount Juliet, closing with a 3-under 69 to win the American Express Championship by one shot Sunday.The victory, his fourth of the year, allowed Els to move past Tiger Woods to No. 2 in the world ranking.Woods finished ninth, and slipped to No. 3 in the world for the first time since May 1999.

FONTANA, Calif. - Adrian Fernandez won a one-lap sprint to the finish in the Toyota 400 Sunday, nosing out Tony Kanaan, whose runner-up finish was good enough to clinch the Indy Racing League series point title.The victory was the second in a row, third of the year - and third in the last five IRL events - for Fernandez.Dan Wheldon, second behind his teammate in the points standings, finished third in the race, with Sam Hornish Jr. fourth.
