St. Louis at Boston (8 p.m. EDT). The Cardinals and Red Sox open the World Series, with Woody Williams starting for St. Louis against Tim Wakefield.
Boston will face its biggest National League nemesis in Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday night. The Red Sox met the Cardinals twice before in the World Series, losing in seventh games in both 1946 and 1967. The teams have played each other in games that count only once since, with St. Louis winning two of three at Fenway Park last year in interleague play.
Woody Williams will start Game 1 of the World Series for St. Louis, manager Tony La Russa said Friday. Williams gave up just one hit in seven innings and didn't allow a baserunner past second base in Game 5 of the NL championship series. He's 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in the playoffs, with 11 strikeouts and four walks in 19 innings.
The cleats Boston's Johnny Damon wore when he drove in six runs Wednesday night in Game 7 of the AL championship series are being auctioned off on eBay, with the proceeds going to Franciscan Children's Hospital. Damon came out of a slump in the autographed Pumas, hitting a grand slam and a two-run homer in the Red Sox's 10-3 victory over the New York Yankees.
"They showed what they can do, coming back from 3-0. They never give up. They knew it wasn't over until they lose that fourth game," St. Louis' Albert Pujols on Boston becoming the first team in major league history to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven postseason series.
