Raiders make quick work of Belle Vernon in 6-0 rout

JACKSON TWP - Quickly and decisively.

That's how the Seneca Valley girls soccer team put its stamp on its playoff victory over Belle Vernon (12-8).

The Raiders (12-4-2) tallied three goals in a span of fewer than seven minutes in the first half before running away with a 6-0 win in a WPIAL Class AAA preliminary playoff contest Saturday at Raider Stadium.

The win sends Seneca Valley to play at Mt. Lebanon at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Seneca Valley pelted Belle Vernon's goalkeepers with 29 shots while the Leopards managed just three shots against Seneca keeper Aly Intihar.

"We should've scored more than we did," said Raiders coach Dave Sylvester. "We attacked well early but weren't able to finish on all of our opportunities.

But it didn't take long for the Raiders to take control.

Junior Cassie Berlin scored Seneca's first goal in the sixth minute of play.

Berlin took a shot from 20 yards out and Belle Vernon's Kristin Bobuk made an initial save, but the ball had just enough on it to roll beyond the keeper and to sneak inside the left post.

Ashley Johnson scored less than three minutes later before Berlin scored her second of the day in the 13th minute of play.

Bobuk, a freshman, was the third string goalie on the Leopards' roster.

"Our top two goalies (Lindsey Brletich and Megan Mascara) were recently injured, so we were forced to go with inexperience," said Belle Vernon coach John McKivitz.

Bobuk made 10 saves but was pulled in the 30th minute of play in favor of senior Brook Panepinto, who tallied 13 saves and three goals against.

"Brook is actually a forward and led us with 12 goals this season," said McKivitz. "But we needed to try somebody else in goal.

"We tried to pack the defense in tight in the back to help our goalies, but it didn't work," he added.

With their midfielders staying back to help on defense, the Leopards' offensive surge resembled a mere trickle.

"We slid a few defensive backs up a bit to try and keep the ball in Belle Vernon's end," said Sylvester.

And that's where the vast majority of the action was played out.

Jessica Meurer scored before halftime to give Seneca a 4-0 lead at the break.

Kim Chapman and Ashley Rees each scored a goal to put the finishing touches on the victory in the second half.

The Raiders have surrendered just 12 goals in 18 games this season and are currently on a 12-game unbeaten streak.

"We played a special team today," McKivitz said.

"I congratulate Belle Vernon on making the playoffs, but it's a tough thing to come up here and play this team," Sylvester said of his group. "The big test will come Tuesday."

Mt. Lebanon (14-3-3) finished in second place in Section 4-AAA behind Moon.
